End of Days: 11 Year Old Kills Self Because of “Gay-Bullying”

The new Livesteez is reporting that lil Carl Walker-Hoover killed himself because of the gay bashing he received at school:
Relentless taunting resulted in the tragic end of an 11-year-old Massachusetts boy, who hanged himself last week after being teased by his classmates.
Sirdeaner L. Walker discovered her son, Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, hanging by an extension cord in her Springfield home on April 6. Walker said her sixth-grade student at the New Leadership Charter School, was often the target of gay jokes and was threatened with physical violence on a daily basis. The young football and basketball athlete, who was also a Boy Scout, took his own life when anti-gay bullying and constant harassment became too much for him to endure. Since September, the boy’s mother made frequents phone calls to the school’s administrative staff and pleaded for them to address the situation but claims to have gotten minimal response.
Walker-Hoover’s suicide occurred just two weeks before the National Day of Silence. Thousands of students will participate in the annual event by taking a vow of silence to bring attention to anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) bullying and harassment at school.
Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLESN) Executive Director, Eliza Bayard, said: “As we mourn yet another tragedy involving bullying at school, we must heed Ms. Walker’s urgent call for real, systemic, effective responses to the endemic problem of bullying and harassment. Especially in this time of societal crisis, adults in schools must be alert to the heightened pressure children face, and take action to create safe learning environments for the students in their care. In order to do that effectively, as this case so tragically illustrates, schools must deal head-on with anti-gay language and behavior.” Bayard added, “as was the case with Carl, you do not have to identify as gay to be attacked with anti-LGBT language.” She concluded, “our hearts go out to Carl’s mother, Sirdeaner L. Walker, and other members of Carl’s family, as well as to the community suffering from this loss.”
According to GLESN, this is the fourth suicide of a middle-school aged child linked to anti-gay bullying this year.
In a statement to Springfield Republican Sirdeaner said, “if anything can come of this, it’s that another child doesn’t have to suffer like this and there can be some justice for some other child. I don’t want any other parent to go through this.”

That is so sad. Kids can be so cruel sometimes. It is nice to encourage your children to embrace others who may be different than yourself. Children should be taught to refrain from antagonizing others with ridicule.

We need to stop this - gay bashing, homophobia, etc because our children are suffering the consequences. Kids get this behavior and intolerance from adults and we need to change our behavior regarding LGTBs. You don’t have to agree with it but you don’t have the right to bully and impose your beliefs on someone else. Regardless of this child’s sexuality (hell did he have one yet at eleven??), the school should have done more to protect him. Now a seemingly bright and capable young man is gone for no good reason. Rest in peace.

You don’t have to call on actual violence to be homophobic. Many studies show that kids who are homophobic bullies tend to act out their bigotry in more extreme ways as they get older, if they are not educated about tolerance beforehand. I bet there are many kids that read this blog and think its cool to beat up gay(ish) kids.

Bullying is an age old problem that will never go away. Whether its appearance, weight, race, clothing, sexuality,……. kids will always tease one another. Its really a reflection of parents ability to parent. When I was about 10 there was this young kid that hung himself because he felt that if there was one less mouth to feed his brother and sister would be better off. It happened at Ft. Ord CA….. his father was stationed overseas and due to a mistake the checks weren’t being forwarded to his family. Its one of the reasons I’ve never ever even considered joining the military…. the red tape involved with the simplest things is horrible and my family has served for 3 generations.

I just watched the video interview with this little boy’s mother and it’s heartbreaking. . .An 11-year-old — a baby — committed suicide.
The mother is a breast cancer survivor and has experienced homelessness, but, obviously, she said this is the worst tragedy she has ever endured. She said that school officials did not respond to her repeated complaints on the harassment her son suffered. The problem of bullying is a constant one in schools, and I think with the Internet, you now have more instances of “cyber-bullying” as well.

maybe i was a lil olderi dont know i just knew i was attracted to boys when i was younger. Overcoming odds at 11 isn’t as easy at it seems. I was picked on in high school because a lot of boys liked me. Believe me it was not easy. My mom after speaking to the principal and that not working tried to get me to “overcome odds” but I couldn’t. The way I got over it was by cutting classes each day, until my family removed me from the school.
I had a big heart and was nice to everyone; people being nasty to me for no reason was a lot more than I could handle.

The problem is the parents do not teach their children how not to judge and people have feelings. Sometimes it is best to keep things to yourself. I was teased as a kid. What I did is beat down every kid that had something to say. Teach your kid how to have heart and stick and stones. I don’t try to down gays or people that are different. I don’t pick on them or try to make hem feel less than. I have had some gays that I would consider are really good friends. On the other hand, I wouldn’t have them over to my house, until at least the kids are older and I can properly explain the difference. It’s very sad that this has deteriorated into more homophobia. As noted, it’s not even clear that the little boy who took his life was even gay. He was ridiculed for the clothes he wore, and as we know (or should know), it doesn’t take much for boys/men to be labeled as gay nowadays. And if he was, so what?
The bigger issue to me is how the anger of kids nowadays is often out of control, and the harassment of children — including Carl — is a constant challenge in schools. There’s something horribly wrong when we have kids filming fights with teachers and each other and posting them on YouTube and other sites.
There seems to be a missing link with a lot of young folk now — Yes, bullying has always been an issue, but the level of violence and harassment has been at a fever pitch for a while, and, I think, a lot of the kids involved in these activities have little to no parental guidance at home. It’s like they’re functioning on auto pilot and are emotionally and morally detached. It’s frightening, and these are the adults of tomorrow.
Discussions about the so-called “evils” of homosexuality are masking the real issues at hand, IMHO.

1.If the mom knew her son was constantly being teased which obviously he was running home crying and distressed about, why was she only making calls. Take a day off from work, go up to that school, hell wait till the end of the day to see who’s there to pick the children up and go up to those parents. When administrators don’t do the job it’s time to go to the school board and make a complaint about the school. IF they don’t do the job, then you are liable to sue the school board for the protection of your child.
2. At what point was this 11yr old by himself to even do such a thing? Was it at night while everyone was asleep? Most kids are too busy to even do such a thing. I know my lil bro and sis come home and do homework, then they have dinner, they may have some tv time/video games/go outside (usually with family) but there’s nobody in their rooms with doors closed or anything, they take a bath, then hit the bed.

Of course, having just ONE person to show compassion and care is important to the development of the child, but the parent can’t always be there. I think about the way my parents tried to shield me from everything, but I went to DC public schools for sometime, and I VIVIDLY remember seeing some scary things- and that was in a middle/elementary school alone!
The teachers, whether they like it or not, must face the reality of their failure to this young man and the people his death will affect. As an aspiring teacher I take matters such as this to heart. Wow, I know how this feel. Kids can be so crue, but it’s adults that are teaching it to them! I was teased everyday as a kid so bad that I thought about killing myself. Yes, I am and have been all my life and will be, to honest, My first sexually experience was with a man, I was a late sexually active person, I did not have sex with the above mentioned person until I was 21 years old, why I did it.. To be sure,, because like I said I knew I liked women/girls since I can remember (6/7). But before I embarked in this life, I had to be sure, so I dated, and had sex with this young man.. Interesting (and I don’t mean it like you’re a spectacle to behold or anything)…one of my best friends was “straight” or so we thought…later I walked into her room (we shared a suite in college) and found her with another girl in her bed…I felt sort of betrayed, thinking she knew all along and took advantage of me when I walked around the room half naked or hugged her to death, held her hand, etc etc. I just loved this girl to death, and I still do despite how I felt.
Now, I don’t want to generalize but she always had terrible things to say about her father, a pastor who is actually still with her mother. She tells me she didn’t know she felt this way until earlier that semester when we were freshmen.

I’ve been on here for about a year & a half now and it took me about a year to get used to some of the comments expressed on Bossip…
This ain’t nothing…
When I say I understand, it’s because it used to surprise and kinda upset me that some people would have some of the opinions that they have on a post where you didn’t think ANYBODY would say anything bad, wrong or outlandish…
It took me a while, but I got used to it and am at the point I’ve become desensitized to the outrageous comments on Bossip…
You just gotta remind yourself of what kinda website that you’re on (*they ask women which one would they hit and give them the choices of a gay short fat man or a flamboyant man you know isn’t interested in women) and that there are actually people who ACTUALLY hold some of the viewpoints that they express on here and some of them aren’t in fact trying to be funny (**most of them are but for the most part in my opinion there are people on here and some I believe to be Bossip Staff people that say stuff just to rile people up)…
Just look at this website for entertainment and when you go on a topic that has serious content be prepared to read some nonsense and out-there viewpoints & perspectives…

Well, all my straight girlfriends, no the deal, and they walk around half dressed around me, I have two friends that we have been friends since the craddle, literlly, we are more like sisters, We trust each other, My other straight girlfriends trust me as I do them, they know I have NO interest in them sexually what so ever, it would be like incest with my two best friends,, but they know I am not a extremly sexually person and very conservative when it come to sex.. maybe to a fault,, I have to be inlove, and know there is commitment before I can share myself like that.. My female friends and I who are straight, can hug, change in front of each other, because we know what the deal is , I respect myself to much to engage in a behavior that is not healthy or mentally right for me… Your friend may have a attraction for you,,, but I am sure or at least hope that she respects the “friendship” I could never sleep with a friend, or twist my mind to be attracted to them. I have straight women friends that I find attractive, but to me sexually with them,, is just nasty to me,,, they are friends,, we should all have bondaries straight or gay.. You will find interesting, scientifically published articles that explain in PLAIN english that some are indeed born gay, effected during utero while the mother is carrying. I’ve seen a few comments on here that say that it’s his parents fault and all sorts of random ridiculousness. It’s amazing how people can be so damn cold. Why in the hell would blame his sexual orientation on his parents, as if they came up and said, “Hey, son, I want you to to desire men.” This is crazy, the inconsideration. I guess everything that happens to people in life is necessarily the parents fault. Instead of people praying for his family’s strength, you want to blame the family. I pray that God has mercy on your souls and that he forgives you for whatever sins you may commit. Dare I say that if you lie and someone kills you that it’s your parents, fault. Noone deserves to be killed. Life and death belongs to the creator alone.
Judging by most of the comments on this and other posts, I’d say a majority of the posters here were probably bullies and talked about other people all the time when they were in school.

This just breaks my heart in so many ways.
We do not even know if this child was actually gay. It could have just been a label put on him by other children.
Also, being gay/lesbian/bi/transgender etc etc is just as much a minority - if not more - than being black is. What people need is to relate. You may not agree with ones choices but there is absolutely no need to ridicule someone for it. I don’t like the way junkies abuse substances but I will reach out to them, not kick them in the face.
I don’t believe the parents are entirely to blame but the kids are learning from somewhere. They are eminating what they hear in songs, see on tv, read on the net and the general attitudes of those apposed to the lifestyle. Kids are cruel. People need to be more wary of their impact on younger generations or else we are all going to end up killing each other/ourselves.

very sad. I’m 27, and i still remember being teased as a kid for being effeminate. It still effects me to this day. Kids can be evil, but its taught at home. When you have parents throwing words like sissy and f-ggot around, kids will automatically think its okay to bully others because they are different.

First of all this is such a sad story and my heart breaks.
I am somewhat of a weird bird. I am a Chritian and do not believe homosexuality is God’s best, however I do not believe it is as simple as a choice. In fact, I have always found it interesting that most people who say homosexuality is a CHOICE are not gay. And I have never really understood how one can literally CHOOSE their sexuality. It’s like me standing in front of pictures of Denzel and Halle and I conciously DECIDE which one I am attracted to. I think they are both attractive people but I am not attracted to them both. And how can I totally delete my attraction to one and HONESTLY in my heart switch it to the other?
The suicide rate for gay teens is 4 TIMES THAT OF HETEROSEXUAL teens, and I wonder why those gay teens don’t realize it is all as simple as a choice as so many straight people believe. Why is it that so many of them commit suicide when all they have to do is CHOOSE not to be gay?
People say how can kids be aware of any type of sexuality. Well, I can only speak for myself and I knew at 6 years old. My first crush was on a classmate of the same sex. Crushes on teachers were of the same sex. Going through Puberty, my “wet dreams” were all of the same sex. When all of my friends were beginning to fall for girls, I was terrified and panicking because I wasn’t. I contemplated suicide myself because I figured I was going to hell anyway because I was told gay people go to hell. The awful times of trying to MAKE myself be attracted to the opposite sex. In fact I WANTED to be attracted to the opposite sex but I didn’t know how to. I thought looking at nude pictures would do it. I thought getting a girlfriend would do it. But I couldn’t make it happen. I think of the days of sitting at the dinner table and dying on the inside as my family talked about hating gays. The painful “go along” laughter I participated in among the congregation at my church when my spiritual leader would talk about “sissies”. It was very very difficult. So from my personal experience, I just can’t subscribe to sexuality being a choice like you would choose what pair of socks to put on for the day.
Also, keep in mind this was ALL BEFORE I lost my virginity at 20 years of age. I was attracted to the same sex LOOOOONNNNNGGGGG before I lost my virginity. I know there are many who cannot begin to understand how it is possible for a person to have NO ATTRACTION to people they are SUPPOSED to be attracted to. But it is the reality for millions.
I’ve decided to stop here. I had much more typed, however I had second thoughts about exposing anymore of my life.

My brother is gay and he is now 28 years old….we NEVER allowed this kind of bullshit to go on. People in our neighborhood knew not to fuck with my brother and he pretty much kept to himself till he was able to find his own identify and come on out the closet on his own. Now we are the best of friends and he is so comfortable with his life style choices….I am actually proud of him….even though I would DIE if my son told me he was gay….I would just die….and I am just being honest. BTW my son is 11 years old and is a very srong willed young man. I have told him I better not ever find out that he makes fun of boys and girls who are “different”. God hates the sin but loves the sinner……
It is time for parents to start being parents, I know some things parents can not control yet in my opinion it has gotten way out of hand.Parents need to let their children know if they pick on other children they will suffer consequences for their actions.
